Customer Centered Web Design

Who Is Your Website Really For?

When developing a website, one of the first things you should determine is who your website is for. Your website is meant to cater to your target audience or customers, but if you don’t know who they are, how can you accomplish this? Many people look at a website as another item on the to-do-list; pick up ball-point pens… check, respond to emails…check, build a website… check. However, your website should be an investment that helps you accomplish significant goals such as lead generation, increasing awareness and revenue.

Your website will help you reach said goals if it is developed in way that shows your target audience that you are the valuable resource and solution that they are seeking. To know that you are the best resolution means knowing what the problem is and why it needs resolving; which in turn means knowing who it is that actually has the problem. To know the what and the why, you must know the who.

Get To Know Your Customers

For businesses and organizations that have been operating and servicing for any substantial amount of time, getting to know who your customers are, is a manner of analyzing the data that you have available on your current customer base. You can collect some of this data from marketing campaign results (social media, email, digital ads, ect.), purchase patterns and Google Analytics if you already have a website. Consider the demographics and psychographics of the people that have already purchased your goods or services. If you are a start-up, consider who your prospective customer would be. Who would you like to service? What does their life look like? Whether your business is new or seasoned, consider what problems your potential customers are facing on a day to day basis that would bring them to seek help from a business or organization such as yours for a solution?

Benefits Of Knowing Your Customers

If you know your customer, you can develop a website that offers a clear, and user-friendly solution that will fulfill their needs and desires. You get a clear vision of what your site should focus on. If you know your friend is a vegetarian, you would not offer her a turkey burger because it seems like a healthy option to you. You would give her what you know she wants and will satisfy her hunger as opposed to offending her or causing her to look elsewhere to satisfy her hunger. By knowing your target audience, you can develop a site that gives them what they need and present it in a way that is appealing, shows that you understand and can relate, and that you’re not just trying to sell but you care enough to help solve a real problem.

Need help finding your target audience? I start every project, whether a new website or brand identity or a redesign, with strategy that includes defining and aligning your customers and their needs with your goals. This is a crucial step to take prior to any design; it helps myself and my client to be on the same page with the design direction and develop a finished product that will offer a solution to their target customer’s needs.
