Why Your IT Department Shouldn’t Be Building Your Company Website

IT Professional vs Web Agency

The Costly Assumption Many Businesses Make

There seems to be a growing trend that I have encountered way more times than I would prefer. It’s an assumption that businesses and organization are making, that is actually costing them in more ways than one, and it has to deal with who is developing their websites. Many organizations try to save money by assigning their website development to their internal IT professional or IT department.

Having the internal IT department build your website may sound like a logical decision on the surface, I mean they do work with computers, they understand technology and they know how to build systems. However, website development is not simply a technical function; especially for a business or growing organization. A business website is a marketing tool, a communication platform, a brand experience and a sales and conversion system. Having technical knowledge alone is not equal to the expertise of a strategic website developer.

Understanding The Role of
an IT Professional

IT (information technology) professionals develop, secure and manage computer-based information systems, networks and databases. They are true experts in network infrastructure, hardware and software support, cybersecurity, troubleshooting tech issues, server maintenance, internal systems management and data protection. Their job in a nutshell, is to keep systems stable and functional. Their role is strictly operational, and has nothing to do with strategic branding. They are not typically trained in consumer psychology, conversion optimization, user behavior, visual communication, graphic design or brand positioning.

Website Development Requires an Entirely Different Skill Set

IT professionals are very tech savvy and pretty intelligent when it comes to computers, so many organizations simply assume that developing a website should fit right into their job description. However, just because someone understands technology does not mean they understand how to create a website that drives growth. Strategic web development is a multi-disciplinary process that goes far beyond simply building webpages or making a website functional. An effective website requires the integration of several specialized areas of expertise working together toward a common business goal.

The Skills Needed For Effective Web Development

It involves foundational brand strategy to clarify positioning, messaging, and audience alignment; UX (User Experience) design to create intuitive and intentional user journeys; UI (User Interface) design to ensure the website is visually structured, modern, and easy to navigate; graphic design to establish professionalism, trust, and brand consistency; and conversion strategy to guide visitors toward meaningful action through strategic calls-to-action and lead generation systems. In addition, successful website development requires an understanding of marketing psychology and user behavior so the website not only looks professional, but also communicates effectively, builds credibility, and supports business growth. This combination of strategy, design, psychology, and functionality is what separates a strategic website from a website that is simply operational.

Why So Many Businesses Make This Mistake

Many businesses make the mistake of tasking the development of their company’s website to their internal IT department for several reasons. One of the biggest reasons is the attempt to save money. They want to utilize internal resources and feel that it’s more cost efficient. However, how much are you really saving if the website is not getting you the results you’re after?

Another common reason is the lack of understanding about what makes a website effective. Many business owners assume that website development is mostly technical. Having the ability to build a website, does not mean you have the ability to build an effective one. With all the templates and AI assistance available today, anyone can just “build” a website, but it takes those special skills I previously mention to actually build a website that helps you meet your goals, make meaningful connections, generate leads, boost efficiency and build awareness. Also, many businesses confuse functionality with strategy. A website can technically “work”, have all the bells and whistles and still fail as a business tool.

The Hidden Risks Business Often Overlook

Many businesses overlook the hidden risks that come with relying on an internal IT professional to build their website. While the website may function technically, it often lacks the strategic structure needed to create a strong user experience, communicate value clearly, and support business growth. Poor navigation, outdated layouts, inconsistent branding, and weak messaging can quietly damage credibility and cause potential clients to leave before taking action. Without conversion-focused strategy and intentional user journeys, businesses often struggle with low-quality leads, inconsistent inquiries, and missed revenue opportunities.

Internal inefficiencies can also increase when teams are forced to manually answer questions and guide prospects through processes the website should already handle. In many cases, companies eventually realize the website no longer supports their goals and must invest in a complete redesign later; turning what initially seemed like a cost-saving decision into a far more expensive mistake long-term.

The Right Partnership Produces Better Business Outcomes

Technological knowledge alone is not enough to produce an effective website. An organization’s website is too important to treat as just another technical task. Though IT professionals are incredibly valuable within their area of expertise, they don’t have the skill set needed for strategic website development. When you partner with a strategic web development company, like S. Mays Designs, you get a website that functions as your digital business partner. The foundational structure for the development is: your business goals, your target audience, brand positioning and efficiency.
